What is a podcast?



Why Podcast?
  1. They are easy to make!
  2. They are easy to share and publish.
  3. Students love to create them.
  4. They can be downloaded on to web-based cell phones or iPods.
  5. They provide 24/7 opportunities for instruction, review or expression of class information.

Classroom Uses
  1. Communicate with students - Publish simple reminders and messages that students can listen to and scribe to with ease.
  2. Communicate with parents - Create a parents podcast to keep parents informed of class activities and assignments.
  3. Create tutorials or reviews - Assist absent students or struggling students by providing audio or video reviews of important ideas or concepts.
  4. Reach struggling readers in a new way - create a podcast of a complicated reading assignment and allow your struggling reader to listen as they read along. This allows them to understand the content and experience comprehension without becoming frustrated or disinterested.
  5. Project-based learning - Allow students to create podcasts as a 21st Century way for them to demonstrate learning and creativity.

Mac Users:

Apple's GarageBand
- Part of the iLife Suite of software from Apple, GarageBand allows for easy podcast and music creation. The software includes podcasting presets and with thousands of sound effects, beats and rhythems include with the software, sound and music can be added to any podcast. The GarageBand software makes the editing process very easy. Since you are able to create your own music with the instruments included with the GarageBand software, copyright laws do not come into play for student created podcasts. Magic GarageBand, which is also a feature, makes music creation even easier. Also, all new Apple computers include a very good built-in microphone, so no additional hardware is needed to make good quality podcasts. Finally, GarageBand allows one to easily add images to every podcast, thus making an enhance podcast or photostory easy to complete.
